What really stops mid-career women from moving into technology roles?

Reply

Since 2022 the SheLeadsTech Conversion Programme has helped close to fifty women — homemakers, sales professionals, administrators — into technology governance, risk and compliance careers.

The pattern I see is that skills are rarely the barrier. Confidence, unpaid time, employer scepticism about 'non-traditional' CVs and the absence of a structured pathway are far bigger obstacles.

Angles to consider

  • If you changed careers, what was the hardest step — and what helped most?
  • Employers: what would persuade you to interview a candidate without a technology degree?
  • What should a conversion programme offer that it currently does not?

My view: a goal without a plan is just a wish list — the structure matters more than the motivation. What has your experience been?
